This article helps out a lot of you face this situation later on in life. Identity theft is not only a problem of individuals, but also small businesses and corporations. Unfortunately with the ease and flow of information via computer networks and the internet, it is easier than ever to find access and use personal and financial information of others. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your name, Social Security number or other identifying information without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. Typically, identity thieves use someone?s personal data to empty the victim?s financial accounts, run up charges on the victim?s existing credit cards, apply for new loans, credit cards, services or benefits in the victim?s name, file fraudulent tax returns or even commit crimes.

Identity theft does not only target those will well-established credit histories. Identity thieves also target those who may not have much credit, such as college students, and set up fake credit accounts in their names. Identity theft can also provide a thief with false credentials for immigration or other applications. One of the biggest problems with identity theft is that very often the crimes committed by the identity theft expert are often attributed to the victim. Identity fraud complaints and related information are shared electronically between the FTC and other law enforcement agencies nationwide via the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure, encrypted website. The network was initially set up in 1997 as a way of tracking telemarketing scams.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing financial crimes, and can affect you and your credit record for years. You can take some measures to protect yourself. Identity theft has become perhaps the defining crime of the information age, with an estimated 9 million or more incidents each year. Arguably, however, few persons are aware of the complexities of the many issues involved with this crime, which is really a large set of fraudulent activities ranging in size from minor swindles to major crimes using stolen identities. Identity theft starts with a scam of some kind. Criminals will take advantage of any situation to gain access to your personal information.

Identity theft abstract: identity theft identity theft has grown at an alarming rate, and is a serious issue due to the financial hardship this crime can place on the victim. If you have a question about identity theft, or if youre wondering about identity. Identity monitoring to track your personal historical records. Listing of credit applications made in your name. Identity thieves obtain the information to commit the crimes listed above in a variety of ways. According to a 2005 survey by the Council of Better Business Bureaus and Javelin Strategy & Research, found that 29% of cases involved a stolen wallet or purse.

Identity theft victims may choose an extended fraud alert good for seven years. Identity theft related crime has been identified as the fast growing crime trend in America today. In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission identified the Phoenix metropolitan area as having the highest rate of identity related crime per capita of any other city in the nation.

Check out Arduino , a totally cool tiny embedded computer suitable for creating smart things - art, robotics, sensors and controllers. You program it on your laptop, and download the program to the device. Check credit card statements and pay bills online. When possible cancel paper bills and statements.

Like insurance, these services generally offer to cover certain costs that can arise during typical identity theft situations. This can be anything from lawyer’s fees to wages that may be lost during a lengthy credit restoration process. Lies always take us further away form God; they never bring us closer to him.

Identity Theft Help Idenity theft is a very serious issue that needs to be tackled before it happens. Idenity theft is one of the worst crimes for the individual victimized and the businesses compromised. It has taken over the nation and compromised our way of living long enough.

Victims have been known to lose their jobs, be refused loans, education, or housing. Some people have even reported being arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. Victims of identity theft invariably have their credit history ruined and the more often you check it the better off you are. It is similar to checking for cancer as you grow older.

If you’re like most people, you work hard to build your assets and maintain good credit in the eyes of lenders. Through no fault of your own, however, your hard work can be undermined through Identity theft. Having your identity stolen can wreak havoc on your life. If your social security number is compromised, thieves can rack up thousands of dollars on credit cards you don’t even know you have. Your credit rating can be ruined to the point where it’s impossible for you to get any kind of loan. In the worst cases, thieves can get driver’s licenses in your name and impersonate you in criminal pursuits. A warrant could be issued for you for crimes someone else committed in your name.

There are dozens of ways that criminals can access your personal and financial information. For example, they can steal your wallet or purse, rifle through your mail for credit applications, hack into your online accounts or bribe employees at companies who have access to your financial records and identity theft protection Protecting yourself from ID theft requires constant vigilance. There are steps you can take to minimize or prevent ID theft, some of the areas of opportunity for thieves (such as shredding credit card applications and using computer firewalls), but there are some vulnerabilities you simply can’t prevent ID Theft. For those things, early detection is the only way to minimize the damage.

The three main credit reporting agencies, TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, all provide one free credit report per year to consumers. Reviewing these credit reports is one way to identify fraudulent activity. Unfortunately, checking your credit report once a year is not enough to prevent damage from ID theft. Your credit rating can fall quickly once your identity has been compromised. You need to know what’s on your credit on a regular basis to thwart identity thieves from the start.

ID TheftSmart from Comodo offers Identity theft Prevention and restoration services. Besides providing access to your credit score and credit report, ID TheftSmart monitors your credit constantly and alerts you to issues before they have a chance to damage your credit rating. Additionally, they provide email warnings of potentially fraudulent activity so you can stop it in its tracks. You do not have to fear for your credit rating or your good name when you enroll in the ID TheftSmart program.

If you do become the victim of ID theft, ID TheftSmart makes it easy to rectify the problem. A team of licensed investigators immediately puts fraud alerts on your credit to prevent further damage. They then comb through your personal and financial records to identify any suspicious activity and work with the proper authorities to restore your proper credit rating and good reputation. Recovering from identity theft on your own can take hundreds of hours of your personal time. If you are a member of ID TheftSmart, however, most of the work is done for you. Neither your time nor your credit has to suffer from someone else’s bad deeds when you protect yourself with ID TheftSmart.

by: William Roberts

Since identity theft has been increasing over the past ten years by a startling 80 percent, the identity theft statistics are not extremely encouraging. This presents a cause for concern. These statistics show that this crime is actually being committed on every day in every possible manner. What can the everyday regular person do in the wake of such threats?

You Can Change the Identity Theft Statistics

As you may know statistics are not always accurate due to the fact that most of the time they are conducted within a control group. Nevertheless it is urgent that these identity theft statistics begin to get reversed.

The need to ensure that you do not become part of the identity theft statistics is great due to the fact that they can have a huge effect on you both personally and professionally. Actually, making sure you stay clear of any misbehavior is not a daunting task at all. Identity theft statistics proclaim that one in every twenty people will fall victim to this scam this year alone. Do you want to be a part of those identity theft statistics or do you want to ensure that you separate yourself from the dangers of this crime?

How Do You Stay Safe?

The prevention of identity theft can be as simple as being organized and preventing the access of your personal information. Your bank account information, social security number, mother’s maiden name, the names of your pets, any dependents you may have and other related information can all be used as proof of identification.

Your wallet or purse is not the place to store this type of personal information. If it was to be stolen, what important items do you keep in your wallet or purse? Anything that has access to bank account information or enables a thief to apply for credit in your name should be removed immediately. Any item that contains your bank account number, social security number, pin numbers and the like should not be kept on your person as these can be easily stolen as well. These items should be kept at home in a safe place.

You should make a copy of every significant paper you keep, such as medical insurance, insurance policies, credit cards, appointment letters, etc. These copies could become a great asset on the chance you do become part of the identity theft statistics. In the inadvertent event you do fall victim to this crime these copies will allow you to quickly inform the proper authorities to cancel or put on hold your accounts until you get situated. You’ll have all the credit card numbers and other important information you need to accomplish this task.

Remaining safe is possible if you are willing to put in the extra effort needed and remain on high alert when you are dealing with personal sensitive information.

By stealing a person’s private, personal information an individual is able to steal that person’s identity. This sensitive information can be found on birth certificates and social security cards. Sometimes a thief is able to use the new technology of today and “hack” into the database of a company for the sole purpose of accessing personal and financial information from that company’s client records.

Identity theft and mailboxes was a match made in heaven for low-tech crooks that will simply go through someone’s mail to get information. To avoid being a victim of identity theft and mailboxes, precautions are available that can reduce your risk. Also, if you believe you may be a victim, there are numerous actions accessible for you to take.

Minimize the Risk

For a person that wishes to steal another’s identity, for whatever reason, identity theft and mailboxes are the perfect crime. This is due to the availability of so much personal information arriving at our homes everyday on monthly bills, credit card applications, etc. If a few effortless precautions are kept in mind it is rather easy to minimize your chances of becoming a victim.

When dealing with identity theft and mailboxes, making sure that any mail that is being delivered or going out is kept secure. Having said this, any mail that is going out should under no circumstances be left out in the open for pick up by the carrier. Obviously the safest way to have mail picked up by a postal carrier is to simply drop it in a secure U.S. Postal mail box.

Adding to that point, any mail that is being delivered to your location should have a secure drop box that it can be delivered to. And remember, if you are going somewhere that will keep you away from home for an extended period of time make sure to have a neighbor that you trust pick up your mail or have the post office stop delivery for the dates that you will be away.

Actions to Take If Victimized By Identity Theft

If you feel you are a victim of identity theft and mailboxes it is urgent that you take action immediately. Equifax, Experian and Trans Union all have fraud alert systems in place and this a key place to start. Once these three companies put this service into action the individual’s name is flagged. Any suspicious activities will be reported and any new accounts attempting to be opened will be stopped and reported.

Another important step to take if you believe that your personal mail may have been taken by others is to report it to the U.S. Postal Service as soon as possible. This will bring about two things.

Since tampering with the U.S. mail is a federal crime the postal service will initiate the resources they have to investigate this activity. Secondly, reporting this potential crime will make certain a record is created. This may help to reduce any possible damage that can be done from an individual making use of your name.

by: William Roberts

Since automotive dealerships deal in high priced transactions they are a huge target for identity theft scams and need to protect themselves accordingly. Businesses in America lose more than $56 million each year due to identity theft and the number continues to rise. In order to protect their company from identity theft, automotive dealerships need to take a two-pronged approach to reduce it. They need to become educated on how this theft takes place and they then need to take necessary action to prevent it.

How Does It Happen?

Auto dealerships have weaknesses in their businesses that they must understand before the necessary steps to stop it can be taken. A person purchasing a vehicle must be properly identified. A glance at a driver’s license or a call to a credit company is simply not enough. This is a well known weakness of auto dealers for criminals and it’s the most important reason protection from identity theft is so important. This circumstance puts the dealership at risk in two ways.

The first way is obviously making the sale of an expensive vehicle to a customer that is not who they say they are. Some sales representatives care more about making the sale and if red flags arise they simply wave them away. There are times when a check of the credit will remind the sales person to confirm the identity of the purchaser. Regrettably a lot of sales people believe all that is needed are a few forms of identification.

Would be criminals are well aware of these facts so they ensure they politely offer several different types of counterfeit identification. Automotive dealerships need to ensure they are protected from identity theft even after a fraudulent buyer is long gone. This is about the time that the second person in this scenario, the victim of the identity theft, will come bursting into the dealership and demand that the sales contract be terminated immediately. The dealership may not only be out of a vehicle but they may also need protection from a potential lawsuit that the identity theft victim may file.

How to Be Protected

Identity theft protection for automotive dealers needs to be in place from the point of purchase. Smart ID software is a program that is highly recommended for good reason. It enables the dealer to confirm the actually identity of the person in front of you and not just authenticate the forms of identification presented. Each person has a unique background and this software will set up a personalized question set based on that background. The questions presented can only be answered by the actual individual. Although this form of identity verification may be a bit more time consuming it is well worth the investment.

by: William Roberts

The history of identity theft began when people would pretend to be someone else. People used to be asked their first name and then someone could obtain products and services with that information. Identity theft has taken on a whole new meaning with today’s electronic age. But, as far back as we can remember people have been declaring they are somebody else to escape from their past or avoid a new history all together.

Before identification cards were invented it wasn’t out of the ordinary for thieves to pretend to be somebody else. Back then identity theft wasn’t always for getting something for free. Sometimes it was just about traveling under an assumed name as to not be noted on the journey. However, the history of identity theft is full of stories of death and devastation. Probably the most widespread way to steal a person’s identity was to make that person vanish through murder and then take on their identity.

Although the internet has done away with most of the violence identity theft used to bring the effects are still just as devastating. Dumpster diving and rummaging through mailboxes used to be major favorites in the history of identity theft to get a hold of personal information.

Computers Make Identity Theft Safer For Thieves

People feared getting bitten by wild animals rummaging through garbage cans so they moved their identity theft to the phone. This way they could get the personal information needed directly from the source. They would convince victims they were employees at a bank calling to verify personal information and people would readily release it. The computer and email have become the newest bit in the history of identity theft. The phone is no longer needed when an email can be sent just as easily.

Identity thieves have become good at creating websites that look identical to the ones people see everyday when they log onto their bank accounts or retail store for shopping. They attempt to alarm people into updating their personal information including social security numbers, credit card numbers and other information. People that are familiar with the history of identity theft are still fall victim as they believe the knowledge they have will protect them.

To ensure that you don’t fall victim and become a part of the history of identity theft common sense is a must. Only provide personal information in person so you can be sure the person receiving it actually needs to know.

by: William Roberts

It can be quite unsettling to receive a notice in the mail that the car loan you applied for has been rejected. More so if you haven’t recently applied for a loan. Identity theft car loan scams are growing in large proportions due to online credit applications being so readily available. What’s more, this doesn’t only happen when using the online loan application process. There are people out there that will send unwanted emails that offer unbelievable interest rates for a car loan. Some people that may be in the market for a new car are able to easily fill out the small, online application sent to them. They are advised that a notification will be sent containing what their monthly payment will be.

Even people that have no interest in purchasing a new car may decide to fill out the application simply out of curiosity. Inadvertently they send their personal information willingly to a site set up for scams that will utilize that information for everything but the purchase of a new car. Since many of the previously used scams have people on alert the identity theft car loan scam has grown as of late.

There are people that will give their personal information to someone calling them regarding their recent car loan application, even if they haven’t recently applied. They willingly give their social security number and verify it with their mother’s maiden name to someone over the phone. In order to avoid being a victim of the identity theft car loan scam, ensure you never apply for a loan unless you work with someone in person at a dealership.

Treat All Information as Need to Know Only

Convincing potential victims that pertinent information is needed before an application can be processed in only a part of identity theft car loan scams. When you deal with a company that you have dealt with in the past, all of your information they need should already be in their files. A different tactic identity theft car loan scam callers may try is to state that they are investigating fraud connected to you and if the questions they ask are not answered correctly you may be arrested.

If you were being investigated for possible fraud the company believing so would not give you a courtesy call to warn you. Police officers would just arrive and make the arrest. Fear is only one of the variations used in identity car theft scams taking place today.

by: William Roberts

Leaving $100,000 unattended on a table in an unknown restaurant or on the counter in a department store is probably the last thing you would ever do. However, that is exactly what people with good credit ratings are doing if their credit card slips are left behind after paying. Using common sense is essentially all that is required when taking steps in avoiding identity theft. And the steps that need to be taken are quite simple.

One of the most common forms of identity theft happens on the telephone but the main focus still seems to be the internet. On of the most important things you can do in avoiding identity theft is to keep personal information personal. Never give it to anybody over the phone no matter what implications they threaten you with if you refuse. One example is you’ll receive a call from someone claiming to be from your bank to verify your account information due to an identity theft investigation.

Common sense should prevail if someone calls asking for information regarding your account such as your social security number. If they were actually from your bank they should already have that information. You could turn the tables on them and ask them to give you the information they have on file and you can verify if it is accurate. This is a perfect way of avoiding identity theft. The best thing to do is hang up on the call and put a call into your bank. Someone there should be able to verify if the call was an attempt at identity theft.

Keep Information Hidden From Potential Thieves

Account numbers, names or other information is something a financial institution will never do if you are already doing business with them. Also, your bank should have a fraud reporting email address. If you receive an e-mail that looks like it’s from you bank and they are asking that you log on to a link in the mail - forward it to the fraud reporting address. The only sure way of avoiding identity theft is make a habit of never sending important account information over the internet. You can not be guaranteed that the person receiving this information is who they say they are.

Identity thieves use your identity for financing cars or houses, credit cards and a variety of other pricey items. Avoiding identity theft should be as important as protecting your purse, wallet and checkbook when you consider the financial loss possibilities it presents.

Probably the best way for avoiding identity theft is to make sure that you never give your personal information to anyone over the phone, to anyone you don’t know or through an internet connection that in not secure. Avoiding identity theft is possible if you keep up to date on the scams taking place on the phone, internet and even in person.

Large financial institutions may already have insurance programs to deal with theft or other loss of clients’ data. However, we appreciate that these laws may have other benefits such as reducing a victim’s average losses and improving a firm’s security and operational practices.

We have an identity theft restoration product we think is also one of a kind due to the combination of our identity theft restoration partner and our provider law firms. More information about us and our products can be found at our homepage at www.prepaidlegal.com. After meeting with Legends Business Group, I am confident they will provide the best marketing and support services platform suited for the demands of my business. I was very impressed with the speed of how quickly they are able to navigate the approval process for LEC billing and begin marketing for us. Now, people can report identity theft where they live and that agency will report it to the location of the actual theft.

Attorney Davis Paris has filed a class action lawsuit in Maryland, West Virginia and New Jersey saying that Davis and LifeLock engage in false advertising by seeming to offer absolute protection against identity theft in their ubiquitous ads. Another lawsuit in Arizona alleges that his $1 million ?service guarantee? In 2006, for example, the FTC logged 246,035 identity theft complaints, while a Javelin Strategy survey estimated that there were 8.9 million ID theft victims that year. In addition, the bill expands the list of personal identification information to include such things as an individual’s driver’s license number, social security number, Internet account number and taxpayer ID numbers.

So why does identity theft and methamphetamine use seem to go hand-in-hand? A New York Times article from two years ago, which is still as relevant as ever, says it took police a while to connect the two. One You Security (www.OneYou.com) wraps a security system around the consumer’s identity, shielding it from thieves and greatly reducing wrongdoers’ lines of attack. The firm backs up its offering with a $1 million service guarantee. Credit freezes are one of the most effective defenses against identity theft, Blumenthal said. For a small fee, credit rating agencies ?freeze? a consumer?s credit, making it impossible for anyone, including the consumer, to take out new lines of credit, such as a credit card or loan.

Along with other commonly toted gadgets like USB drives, those physical devices might just be the key to disrupting identity theft. Howard Moscoe (Eglinton-Lawrence) said he learned of the “identity theft” when a fellow councillor mentioned that he was his “friend.”.Unfamiliar with the term as Facebook lingo for being part of each other’s online social cirlces, Mr. Moscoe asked for an explanation. Services include emergency medical transportation, medical referrals, case monitoring claims management, identity theft resolution and data breach response services. Users launch MyLaptopGPS’ features remotely, protecting data even while the machine is in a criminal’s hands. Once connected to the Internet, the software silently retrieves, and then deletes, files from machines as it tracks the stolen or missing hardware — at once returning the data to its rightful owner and removing it from the lost computer. Leveraging key technology partnerships, we deliver end-to-end IAM solutions, data encryption, encryption management and PKI.
