My phone plan was tampered with, my mail was forwarded to a residence that is not mine, and I’m afraid it will get worse from here. I told the police what happened and I told Victims Services also. But no one will give me leads as to how to proceed with changing my social security number. Does anyone out there have any advice for me?

A collection agency has provided me with an ID Theft Affidavit which has an option that asks if I'm willing to assist in the prosecution of the person committed the fraud. I have no idea who it could have been but it took place in MD and I live in CA. If there is a prosecution, I don't want to be hassled with it. I called the collection agency and they say they will not clear the debt if I do not assist. Can they do that? I don't know the laws related to this stuff. I've been battling this collection agency for the better part of 2 years and it seems they are able to dictate the process without having to be constrained by regulations or good judgement. Can someone please help!?

While applying for a job, I was told my background check showed that I am a convicted felon in Minnesota..I've never BEEN to Minnesota! This really threatens me in the job market..how do I run my own background check, to see if this should be reported as identity theft? Any knowledgeable answers very much appreciated!

I had to apply for SSN's for my babies before we even left the hospital with them. Now with this new crisis of identity theft I have to guard those numbers for the next 18 years. Doesn't this seem insane that we have to do this? I have their SS cards which they obviously can't sign yet & I have to keep them guarded until they are old enough to use them. Why can't they just apply for the SSN themselves when they get of age to work & actually NEED it? That's what I did.

It is stupid for the goverment to collect any monies from them as they did not uphold the laws to begin with. The victims of identity theft are paying for a problem they not cause!

I'm doing a paper on Internet privacy. I'm interested to know how common identity theft is.
Has you or anyone you know suffered from some sort of identity theft?
