I recently discovered that my identity was stolen and several "instant" department store credit cards were opened in my name. Luckily, I caught on since I got all these new cards that I didn't request, reported it, and it is now under investigation.
Anyway, I'd like to know if the merchant has any liability in providing the cards outside of checking the ID of the perpetrator when they applied for the credit and processing the forms.
The person who did this had a fake ID with my info on it, but they provided a false telephone number (not even the correct area code) which I imagine would have raised a flag.
This is a preview of
Identity theft legal question. Who is liable and how do I go after them?
.

I'm with you on that one. How can an illegal considered to be in good standing. They have lived and worked here illegally for years. Tax fraud, welfare fraud, stolen IDs, driving without license or ins. How is any of that "in good standing".
Most of the illegals here do not want "a path to citizenship" they just want to stay here and work as long as they can and then go home.
They are using the US for their own gain. It's that simple.

Hi, I used my sister and my mom's information to get credit cards and loans and I used their already issued credit cards without their permission. They both checked their credit reports and found out about it.They have both threatened to press charges and are in the process of filing a police report. What criminal charges and punishment am I looking to face currently. Do you think I will serve any jail time? I am in Pennsylvania and under Pennsylvania law.

I have had my credit card # stolen in the past and have never had a problem with having the charges forgiven. This is $40 extra a year on my premium. Does anyone see any meaningful value with identify theft protection?
