Identity Theft Credit Score

Do you have control over your own credit score once a year, a good idea?
I was told that only has the right to check your credit score once a year, but with everything that is happening with identity theft, I was thinking about joining the office Freecredit report and check once a month. Can you please let me know if I will not be endangering my credit score, which is in the middle.

CHICAGO – The authorities of the State University Indiana, confirmed in recent weeks that the names and social security numbers of 10,420 students attending the university during the 1996-1997 school year is published on the Internet because of an error during a database upgrade.
Oops. This is certainly embarrassing for the school, but the real problem is that over someone's name and social security number, it is easier for a nefarious person to open a credit card or cell phone account in the name of the victim and shopping.
